Getting to know…. Cath Jenkin
I’m very lucky to call this special lady a good friend! She is so kind, talented and hilarious. It was only fitting that she be the first person featured in my Getting to know series.
Let’s get to know CATH JENKIN:

What does healthy mean to you?
I don’t think I have a “Standard” definition of healthy, because I am a big believer in living life to the best of your ability. For me, healthy is a state of mind and a state of being, not just your meals and fitness. I feel far healthier nowadays than I did in my early 20s.

What is your chosen form of exercise?
I’m a (terrible but enthusiastic) casual runner, and I love walking over any other form of exercise, purely because it gets you not only moving, but helps clear the mind too.

What does your way of healthy eating look like?
For me, it’s all about balance. By that, I mean, always aiming for balance and if that means a cookie in each hand one day, and two naartjies in your hands the next day, that’s okay. In raising my kid, I always opted to give her choices when it came to food and meals, as I believed this would enable her to make better nutrition choices later on, and it seems to have worked. As a result, we can polish off a platter of vegetables for dinner one night and then enjoy a creamy and decadent pasta the next. I’m not a believer in restricting food types or the like, but I am a believer in making choices that have forethought.

What is your passion project?
Ooh, good question. I guess my passion project is DigiKids ( Yes, it’s work-related but it was spawned from a shared passion with a friend, and I am always thinking about it, and devoting my spare time to it, when and wherever possible.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Hehe. I’ve learnt that there are no typical days for me, because the things I get to do each day are always changing. But, every day starts at about 05H45 with a cup of coffee and, according to my kid, this is “funny to watch, because it’s like you go from floppy to wakey wakey as you drink it”. Then it’s a run around to get everyone out the house, take care of our dog, Jake, attack my inbox, sign in to Skype for meetings if there are any, and then attack my to do list. I usually wrap up my morning’s work by 2pm, then it’s handle homework, dinner and family time, only to be back at my computer at 8pm until I am done for the day.

What would you like people to know about you?
Hah! Um. That’s another good question. I think that if you know me online, you know how I am in real life. I’m not afraid of having a bad day, because I know tomorrow will be better. I reckon if there’s one thing people could learn about me, is that I am always hopeful, even when I’m having a fall down horrible day.

What would you like people to know about your work?
It’s often misconstrued that people working in creative industries have “easy jobs”. Writing isn’t an easy job, because it involves having to “be” the client, while retaining an essence of creativity and adventure. Telling a good story is as important as providing a great service, and I always feel very privileged when asked to help people or companies tell their story, for whatever purpose or platform. It’s an honour to help!

Favourite workout song?
I have three favourite tunes for this:
1) P!nk – This was playing in my ears on the day I finally conquered running 2kms (which was a huge feat for me, as silly as that sounds) and it never fails to get me going.

2) Katy Perry  Hot ‘n Cold – this song got me through a really bad patch in my life (as lame as that sounds!) but it also reminds me that, when things get tough, I can get past it.

3) Watch it! <—- because it’s super cheesy and instantly puts me in a good mood. LOL

Favourite exercise:
As I said I’m a biggest fan of running and walking, but if I can’t do that, throw me into a Yoga class. I’m thinking about starting Zumba soon too.

Favourite Quote/Advice?
“You are not just a person, my child. You are a legacy. Act like it” – My dad (In an email sent to me in the very early 2000s, when I wasn’t exactly acting like much of a legacy to be proud of).

I love that quote from her dad, wow. Having met Cath in real life after being an online stalker, I must agree with her and say she is very much the same whether behind her screen or across the room.
