I have been following Kate for a few years and I met her very very briefly at a travel blogger talk she was doing in Durban a few years ago. Since then we have been chatting on Twitter, as you do, and we finally met properly last year when we were both flown to Cape Town for an influencer event! It was basically like seeing an old friend after a few months, effortless. She is a breath of fresh air, a wealth of knowledge, a great sounding board and a great friend. I feel lucky to call her that.
Lets get to know Kate Els…
What does healthy mean to you?
I think for me it’s more of a mental state. I have an extremely stressful business with lots of tight deadlines, and I’ve had to force myself to recognize when I need a break.
I still work an intense 9-hour day each day, but I’ve largely learnt to switch off when it’s done and enjoy down time with Pilates and walking.
What is your chosen form of exercise?
Definitely Pilates. I started it to strengthen my core after a back injury last year, and truthfully hated it for the first three months, but now when I see how it’s changed my body and how I move, I love it.
What does your way of health eating look like?
I eat out quite a bit, so when I’m home I need to balance it with meals that are cooked with lean proteins and wholewheat carbs. I devour a ton of veggies too. And of course I indulge in popcorn when I’m grumpy to keep me sane.
What is your passion project?
It has to be photography. I was determined to better learn how to use a camera a while back and I can successfully say I’ve achieved this, but now it’s a case of wanting to be even better!
What does a typical day look like for you?
I wake up at about 5:30 and start the day with my partner drinking coffee in bed and discussing what we both need to achieve that day. It sounds lame but it holds you accountable to them in a way.
Pilates usually happens in the morning after that at a nearby studio, and then onto a good couple of hours work. Because I work from home, it’s a good idea to get out for lunch to prevent cabin fever setting in. After that it’s a few more hours work, cooking dinner and trying to relax.
What would you like people to know about you?
That I’m actually quite approachable. And often insecure.
What would you like people to know about your work/business?
I’m extremely good at being able to link various campaigns within marketing and stringing them together. I know this, and what it means is that I’m often called in to fix projects when they look like they are just about to fail, particularly campaigns with tight deadlines and website builds.
Favourite workout song?
Currently it has to be Calvin Harris’s My Way
Favourite exercise and why?
Pilates. It calms me and forces me to change my focus.
