Love Local – Aerial Yoga

I recently tried out the aerial yoga class at House of Calm in Sunningdale, and it was the most fun and challenging class ever! Zelda was such a great teacher that I went again. I then decided to shoot some of the Puma En Pointe range doing aerial yoga as well, as it is such a strong and beautifully feminine yoga technique. Thanks to Zelda for pushing me to get into positions I didn’t even think I could do!

Let’s get to know Zelda:

Tell us a bit about your background in Durban?
I moved to Durban about 18 months ago – so quite new to this part of the world but loving it.
I had a Pilates studio for 10 years in Pretoria and a MFR Myofascial Release practice for 6.

When did you start your business?
I started teaching Yin yoga at Gurucat Hot Yoga studio in 2016, and I had a MFR treatment room in the yoga studio. My MFR practice is now in House of Calm – Umhlanga Rocks where I also teach Yin Yoga, Air Yoga and basic Vinyasa Yoga.

Tell us about your business
My passion is FASCIA – basically fascinated by fascia, and yoga. MFR therapy (relating to fascia) helps a person regain function and flexibility after injuries and treat chronic pain in many parts of the body.

What is your favourite thing about your business?
Working with people and treating each person as an individual. To be able to see the changes in each and everyone daily. I love teaching Air Yoga where people can challenge themselves, still feel safe and get stronger every time. The hammock can assist or challenge you – a fun and hard work out.

What would you like people to know about your business?
Each and everyone has the ability to heal themselves if they have the right tools. I assist people to get their power back.

What do you love about living and working in Durban?
I love the more “relaxed “ laid back attitude of the people here, the weather and all the different types of yoga I can choose from. And quite obviously I just LOVE the ocean.

How can people support you?
By believing that pain is not the end of the world – it is only a signal that something is wrong. Stick to the natural and holistic way to treat your body. Join my classes or book a session and I will help you on your journey.

Secret Sunrise Yoga Edition

Secret Sunrise Yoga Edition is new to the Secret Sunrise family

Secret Sunrise Yoga is an edition that started out as a once off farewell for one of our instructors, who happens to be an incredible yoga teacher! She was going off for her annual Zanzibar work trip, which is roughly 3 months long, so we thought we would try something new.

It was so well received that we were asked to do another one the next month. So we did. That happened again, so we decided to do a SS Yoga Edition once a month in addition to our usual epic Secret Sunrise/Sunset dances!

SS Yoga is so awesome because where else can you do yoga outside, listening to music and be completely in awe of your beautiful city? The beauty of it, is that with the headsets, you are so completely engrossed in your own world. This helps you focus on yourself and what you’re doing, and not on the others around you. I personally find that with Secret Sunrise in general, I’m never comparing myself to others. It comes from being in your own bubble with the headsets.

I love that this gives yoga a more fun side. A more relaxed side. We’ve had plenty of people trying yoga out for the first time and LOVING it! You feel as if the teacher is right next to you, instead of trying to strain to hear what they said.

It really is an awesome experience that you should try!

*Also, that sunrise though!

Red Bull girls day out

Red Bull treated some of us Durban girls to a fitness morning down by the beach. What a cracker of a day!

We started off with yoga on the beach with SurfSup Yoga, followed by SUP’ing on the Ushaka canals and then breakfast at Surf Rider’s. All in all it was an amazing, active morning which I obviously loved!

Love Local – Monsoon Wellness

Monsoon Wellness opens in Westville and the Upper Highway rejoices!

I met Charlize through Secret Sunrise as one of our amazing instructors! She is a ball of energy and I love that she is so real. She is a joy to be around and I couldn’t be happier that she has opened her own studio, Monsoon Wellness, in Westville for the Upper Highway folks!

Tell us a bit about your background in Durban?
I grew up in Durban and left just after school. I lived in a couple of South African cities and spent a few years in Thailand and Singapore before returning to Durban. I have to admit I found the return difficult and took me awhile to get into the culture here, but once I found my groove I remembered all the lovely things Durban has to offer.

When did you start your business?
I started practising yoga in Thailand in 2009 and got my YTT the same year. I added Pilates to the mix in 2011 while living in Jozi. Massage was a natural progression and I completed my Sports Massage training in Durban in 2015.

Tell us about your business
I offer several styles of yoga, Pilates and massage from my bespoke studio Monsoon Wellness in Westville. I have both group and private classes.

I offer the following classes:
Vinyasa Yoga
Candlelight Yin Yoga
Mom and Baby Yoga
Preggy Yoga
Kids Yoga
New York Pilates

What is your favourite thing about your business?
My favourite part of Monsoon Wellness has to be the 4 times a year retreats, and monthly workshops. Retreats and workshops are a lovely way to immerse yourself in your practise and really allow one the opportunity to focus. I can really research a particular subject and grow my own knowledge while teaching clients something new too.

What would you like people to know about your business?
I offer personal service. I know every one of my clients names, histories and goals. I can tell when you have had a rough day and try to adjust my classes to suit your individual needs. I take my teaching seriously, I constantly study and attend workshops to ensure that I am at the top of my game.

What do you love about living and working in Durban?
I love how easy life is in Durban. People are very quick to smile and are always looking for happiness in life. The constant sunshine makes outdoor living possible and I try to take my classes outside as much as possible. Fresh air, sunshine and happy faces are my experience of Durban.

How can people support you?
Join one of my regular studio classes in Westville (schedule is here).

Join a retreat (next one is in  November in the Berg).

Come to a Workshop (Moms and Babes and Backbends coming up in November).

Book a massage (Holistic, Sports, experience).

Everything I offer can be found at
