New Year New Studio

New Year is all about new beginnings and a fresh start. Everyone is so worried about new year, new me and I’m over here having a new studio rather!

I knew last year I wanted a change to the white wall on the one side of my studio, but I didn’t know what. I was following Shaun Oakley on instagram, aka Damn Vandal, and always loved his work! After seeing some of his latest projects I decided to email him and get a quote! I knew I wanted a floral design and set off finding the perfect one.

The rest is history! I am so so so happy with how it came out and it just makes the space so much happier. Even my clients now train facing the wall! They all love it ūüôā

Check out the before and after below!

Plain white and boring!

Definitely needed a boost!

Getting to know Thando Tsekiso

I met Thando a few months ago, and she is one of those people that you instantly become friends with. She has the brightest smile, the biggest personality and the most beautiful heart. She also lets Fayinthemaze and I ask her the silliest questions and answers without skipping a beat. She’s an entrepreneur, social media influencer, and all around beautiful girl!

Let’s get to know Thando Tsekiso….

What does healthy mean to you?
Healthy means having your body, mind and soul all in good synergy and well balanced.

What is your chosen form of exercise?
My chosen form of exercise is chewing! Kidding ? I hit the gym, but mainly focus on cardio and a bit of weights to tone everything up.

What is your way of healthy eating?
My way of healthy eating involves an assortment of boiled vegetables and a great steak or oven baked chicken!

What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day for me kick starts with gym, a nap, breakfast while watching a sermon and checking emails & my social media. Then the rest proceeds uniquely as per each day’s requirements. Social media plays a big part throughout the day.

What would you like people to know about you?
I wouldn’t like to dictate to people what they should know about me. Just get to know me and they can figure it out.

What would you like people to know about your work/business?
About my work and business, I’m so passion driven with that project. We take great care for the quality we put out and our customer service. (Visit¬†Wild Rose Boutique¬†and have a look!)

Favourite work out song?
My favourite work out song has to be Future – his entire Purple reign & DS2 album.

Favourite exercise and why?
Favorite exercise had to be like attending a Stepping class… Or is it stepper? Yeah those classes are amazing workouts.

Favourite quote or advice?
Shucks, I have far too many fav quotes. Currently it has to be “Always remember – a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle…” simply because there’s so much power and light which unity and knowledge share holds, but us greedy humans fail to see this.

Being a blessing to another person will see your blessings fall right over you.

How to survive the holidays

I keep getting asked “How do I survive the holidays and not put on tons of weight?”
So I thought I would just give you all some basic guidelines to help you along in this time of need!

People are so used to their daily routine of work and working out, that when the holidays come up they tend to start panicking. Most people know that they won’t put in as much effort, or be able to eat exactly as they would at home, but they also don’t want to undo all the hard work they have done throughout the year.

FYI, your body doesn’t know it’s on holiday. So keep exercising and keep in your movement routine as much as possible. Your body is a machine and responds to demands, so make some demands and it will! A holiday is about relaxing, but its also about staying healthy.

You don’t need to be doing an hour a day, you can do 20-30 minutes and still be active enough to maintain your fitness. That being said, your diet can’t be chocolate and burgers every day or you really will need two hours!

Simple tips and tricks:

  • Get a workout in as soon as you’re up in the morning.
  • Go for a run, walk or swim depending where you are.
  • Do a bodyweight circuit, you really don’t need any equipment.
  • Eat a little lean as much as you can, and use your Christmas meal as your cheat meal that week! You do it weekly anyway, so why should it be any different?
  • If you have a fitbit or alike, then use it daily to get in your 10 000 steps and set a calorie goal
  • You can use a calorie tracker like MyFitness pal or MyFatSecret (Tacky name I know) to track your calories in the day so you’re not going over.

We all love our creature comforts and routine of going to the gym, but how nice is it to just do something different and out of the ordinary? Holidays are about being adventurous, so why not be adventurous with your training?

Most people are rounding off work today and that means they’re heading out for some cocktails to put them in the holiday mood! You need to set some limits and know your goals. Obviously if you want to be chugging 4 cocktails a day you really aren’t going to be happy at the end of it (and neither will your head). So maybe have one cocktail then switch to whiskey for example. Just make small sacrifices for this short period of time. You will still be feeling festive and indulging more than usual, but you’ll be happier knowing you are making healthy-ish changes that won’t ruin all of your hard work.

“Earn it or pay for it” as Andrea Orbeck says. Pick your cheats.
If you want wine and dessert, then your dinner should be light and not include chips but rather a salad.

Get out there in the fresh air and be active. 20-30 minutes is really not a lot of time in a day, and your body will love it. You’ll have energy for the day and sleep better that night. If you’ve put in the effort to get to this point, don’t ruin it over a holiday.

There are plenty of HIIT bodyweight circuits on youtube, we all have no excuse really!

Here are some workouts I love for travelling:

Getting to know Cherie Keating

Dermalogica is one of the most loved skincare brands in South Africa, and the world. One can only imagine what it takes to run the brand here in South Africa, but now we know. It takes a strong, driven and hard working woman! That talented lady is Cherie Keating. Cherie has been with the company for over 20 years (I know, look at that gorgeous Dermalogica skin!) and has steadily worked her way up to CEO over those years. In a world where people job hop, it is so inspiring and refreshing to see someone work their way up from the bottom over time. We need strong female role models, and Cherie is one of them!

Lets get to know Cherie Keating:

What does health mean to you?
Health is a holistic thing for me – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Feeling and looking our best, inside and out.

What is your chosen form of exercise?
I need to get better at this, but my CHOICE would be dance …. hands down.

What does your way of healthy eating look like?
I love veg and salads, I keep carbs on the low side, love fish and believe in smaller more regular meals. Snacks made up of tuna rice cakes, nuts and biltong. I like to juice too to get a nutrient boost in.

What is your passion project?
Dermalogica has been my passion project for the last 20 years. Changing the way the world sees skin care. I love to decorate though and all things to do with people, development and mind, body and soul topics. I am itching for another renovation or décor project.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Early dry bar appointment, lots of engaging and meetings, admin/desk work in between and I love my chill time at home with a nice glass of wine and candles in the bath. I need to balance my solitude and people engagement time to restore myself.

What would you like people to know about you?
I believe in being authentic and real, I care deeply about what I do and who I do it with and I am a very nurturing and passionate person.

What would you like people to know about your work/business?
I think the work you do is an extension of who you are really, so the above points apply.
I think I would like people to know that a vision and a passion for that vision is my constant and consistent driver as a CEO, not the bottom line -that is the by-product of doing the right things for the right reasons.

Favourite workout song?
Too many to choose a favourite and it depends on what I need that day: strength, calm, movement etc, but what I can say is music is key to me and great music will always mean a great workout.

Favourite exercise and why?
Dance because you can move, express yourself, free your mind and your spirit and physically enjoy a workout that is about so much more than just the body. Dancing helps me reconnect with me and disconnect from outside stressors.

Favourite quote?
Again many but a favourite:

“BE who you really are, Do what you really love and you will HAVE what you really want.”
