Love Local – Matt Gardiner

Matt Gardiner is a Durban singer and musician and we thought it was time we all got to know him better!

Tell us a bit about your background in Durban

I have lived in KZN for all but one year of my life. In that year I lived in Pretoria, where I studied Civil Engineering. I only did that for my first year at varsity, because halfway through I wondered what on earth I was doing pursuing something that wasn’t even a dream of mine. That’s when I left to study and play music full time. KZN is such an amazing place to play, and the people here are amazing to play for. I always feel so welcome wherever I go, and I want to have a role in making KZN one of the big music hubs in the country.

When did you start your business/craft/brand?

I started singing when I was about 5. It started as singing along to CD’s in the car, and it progressed to being in choirs, then to karaoke, and finally to actually performing by the time I was in grade 9 in 2011. My first ever gig was actually getting the chance to open up for South African legends, Prime Circle. Walking onto that stage was the moment I realised what I was supposed to do for the rest of my life.

Tell us about your business/craft/brand

I am a one-man-band of sorts with a few different tricks up my sleeve. I use my guitar and voice, along with a looping pedal as well as a kick drum to create a really cool, vibey performance. I play a lot of my own songs and I am ridiculously excited to release my first song and see where this amazing path takes me.

What is your favourite thing about your business/craft/brand?

Yoh, there are so many things I love about being a musician. If I had to pick one, it would have to be that at almost every show I play, people tell me that they felt something while listening to my music. To me that’s the most amazing thing about this, the fact that it’s really not about me, but it’s about every single person who is there listening.

What would you like people to know about your business/craft/brand?

I want people to know that I want to leave my mark on the industry, as well as show people my love for music through what I do. I also want everybody to know that their support of me means more than the world to me, because without them, there is no way I would be where I am today. They’re the reason I get to live out my dream.

What do you love about living and working in Durban?

Definitely the people. The people who come and listen, as well as the other musicians in and around Durban and KZN. They’re just the most amazing people to work with, because we all support each other, and we’re all pretty much family.

How can people support you?

People can support me by doing exactly what they’re doing now. Just by being there and being a part of my musical journey. There’s a song of mine “Sea of faces”, that I’d love people to download and share it with everyone they know. I also have some really cool shirts for sale that my manager Spencer organised for me.

You’ve GOAT to be kidding me

When Mermaids and Unicorns brought out their Goatchella leggings I knew I had to have them! Who doesn’t love a goat?

I also knew I had to have photos IN them with a GOAT! So me being me, I made it happen. I roped in my friend Melissa of Melissa Mitchell Photography and off we went to play with some goats!

It was one of the best days of my life. Obviously.

The moment when it puts its head on your chest to cuddle you

I’ll just do my own goat yoga!

Usually I would worry about the fact that I don’t have a full face of makeup, or that my arms aren’t in Summer shape yet, or the rolls when I was sitting down, but I am having the BEST time with these little creatures and I don’t even care about that stuff! Isn’t that how it should be?

As you can see, I am living my BEST life and honestly I was giddy the whole way through!

Love Local – Joe Blikzem

I came across the awesome brand Joe Blikzem, because one of my friends Jodie was wearing it a lot in her photos, and I was pretty curious. I vaguely remember the name from a few years back, but wasn’t sure. So it turns out that my old Crossfit coach has now taken over the brand and I am so stoked for him! I was so impressed with the product that I hopped on immediately and bought some vests! I’m a vest girl, not a fan of sleeves, so I got some of the men’s vests as well and they are SO comfy! I was super impressed with the service, I ordered late afternoon and they were at my door the following afternoon! The quality is awesome, the pricing is brilliant and the service is efficient! I am also obsessed with their tagline: Vat nie kak nie! Let’s have a chat with Jason Donnison about this epic brand!

Tell us a bit about your background in Durban?
I’ve lived in Durban for most of my life and I love it. For the past few years I’ve been involved in the fitness industry and it’s still something I’m really passionate about but I needed to try my hand at something different.

When did you start your brand?
I didn’t actually start the brand. It started in about 2010 and was really popular. For the last 12-18 months it’s been off the scene but we’re bringing it BACK!

Tell us about your brand
Joe Blikzem is a clothing brand with a bit of attitude. Every item has a story and the brand has a ‘personality’. We’re a brand that likes to stand out and as the tag line suggests, “Vat Nie Kak Nie!” (VNKN). There’s a bit of Joe Blikzem in every South African.

What is your favourite thing about your brand?
It is so South African! Everything is locally made, so its for South Africans, by South Africans. Most of our items have a very local theme because we love this country and try to celebrate it as much as possible, in our own Joe Blikzem way 😉

What would you like people to know about your brand?
Firstly that it’s BACK!

Secondly, how versatile our garments are. Everything is great as ‘everyday wear’ but something that people have commented on is how comfortable it is to exercise in. It’s an idea that we’re thinking about as we plan new ranges going forward so watch this space.

What do you love about living and working in Durban?
Durban is such an exciting city and so much opportunity has emerged over the last few years. There used to be this idea that there wasn’t much opportunity here and you had to go to other parts of the country for a real chance. I think that’s changed recently and there’s so much going on here nowadays.

How can people support you?
We have an online shop at www.joeblikzem.co.za and people can buy straight from there. They can also check out our Facebook and instagram pages. We’re always out and about in Durban so you can check what we’re up to from there and come and say howzit.

Forever Fierce with Puma

I recently did a shoot with Mister Smith while I was in Dubai, and the theme was FOREVER FIERCE with Puma.

I was lucky enough to be dressed by PUMA in their incredible new Swan Pack range.

I love the whole message that PUMA is portraying of #DoYou.

It is so important to be you and follow through with whatever that means to you. I think these days we often find ourselves worrying what other people think of us, instead of following our hearts and what makes us happy.

Stop worrying about the person next to you on the treadmill, focus on your own workout.
Stop worrying about how you measure up to them physically.
Stop worrying about how much more money your friend has.
Stop worrying about the Instagram model you follow.

Worry about you.

Do You.

Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce Forever Fierce

If I was worried about what people thought, I wouldn’t have done a shoot. I wouldn’t have dyed my hair purple. I wouldn’t do a lot of things. But, we need to stay true to ourselves in everything that we do. We need to remember that hashtag and take it with us every day!

To follow Mister Smith and his incredible work you should follow him on Instagram and stalk him on Facebook.

Check out his new website as well and be sure to contact him for any work you need done!

The PUMA Swan Pack is available in store now! You need to be quick as it is selling out as fast as you can imagine. To find your closest store visit their website.

Follow PUMA on Instagram and visit their Facebook page as well.

Today we are sharing a local gem, So Whipped. We chatted to owner Candice Courtney about her delicious business.

Tell us a bit about your background in Durban
Durban born and bred babeeee!!! I love my city, love the people! Grew up in Durban North but Durban is so ‘small’ or people are very friendly so you get to know a lot of people from all over Durban. Its the best place in the world!

When did you start your business/craft/brand?
I started So whipped in 2009 in my home baking for friends, it soon grew and we were asked to open at Gateway.

Tell us about your business/craft/brand
We are a local, small business, artisan bakery & cafe. We specialize in baked goods, desserts, fantastic coffee, wedding cakes & The home of the WOAHNUT! We try our best to be responsible with regards to the environment & be socially responsible as well. Our Cafe design is 95% made up of recycled, reclaimed, reused, or green. The only things we couldn’t reclaim was our signage and our water tap.

We do our best to train up previously disadvantaged staff by growing them through the business. i.e. we will hire an unskilled person who has a std 7 pass, they first become cleaners, then they work their was through the ranks and are trained to bake, make coffee, do stocktake etc etc.

What is your favourite thing about your business/craft/brand?
I LOVE people!!! Also being able to be creative with flavors and design.
