Gaelyn Cokayne is a local Durban girl who is currently living in Zambia. We met online and have been friends ever since! I love her fresh, honest approach to life and she has currently launched her business baby Signing Baby!
Tell us a bit about your background in Durban?
I was born and grew up in Durban, attending the same school from grade one right though to matric. I studied at DUT and worked in the emergency medical services in Durban before leaving to travel.
I have always loved the weather, particularly loved the warm ocean, and the diversity of its landscapes.
When did you start your business?
I have only just launched my business this month! So I am brand new, hoping to educate parents about baby sign language and grow a community of signing families.
Tell us about your business
We all know how difficult the first two years of parenting can be, as our children can’t talk and tell us what they need or want. This results in tantrums and tears (from parents and babies!) Signing Baby teaches parents how to use baby sign language with their pre-verbal children, so that communication is not a problem anymore. Babies can tell their parents when they are hot, thirsty, tired or hungry. Imagine not having to guess what your baby needs, because they can simply sign it for you? Signing with your baby reduces the frustration of lack of understanding, and allows for a much closer bond between parent and child. It’s also a LOT of fun!
What is your favourite thing about your business?
I love how much JOY it brings to families! Getting a glimpse into your baby’s world, because you have given them the tools to share it with you, it just priceless. Watching families bond even further with their babies, talking and sharing more with each other before the baby is even old enough to talk, is incredibly special.
What would you like people to know about your business?
That signing is suitable for any child who is not yet talking fluently, including children with educational delays, those who have been born with Down syndrome or are on the autism spectrum. That just like crawling doesn’t delay walking, signing doesn’t delay speech. That if you sign with your baby, you will form such a close bond with them and have so much fun getting to know so much more about them at a much younger age. That it is sold as an ebook, which makes it affordable and accessible to all families!
It is also important for me to share that a big part of who I am and what Signing Baby as a business values, is service to others. Because of this, 5% of all sales goes into a fund that is then collected and used to donate printed versions of the ebook to underprivileged facilities, special schools, and the neediest people in SA.
How can people support you?
I would love for you to engage with me online, ask questions, share videos and photos of your children signing, and spread the word! Not many people know about signing with your baby, and I am hoping to change that.
